Ranelin recorded this for his own Tribe imprint in Detroit, and it has the focused, purposeful feel of music made entirely outside the industry's expectations. The trombone lines are elastic and expressive, and the rhythm section keeps a pulse that's closer to funk than straight jazz in places. Short tracks and long tracks sit next to each other without the pacing feeling uneven. A genuinely distinctive record from an underappreciated corner of the loft-jazz movement.
