Bass Culture

This isn't singing, it's spoken word riding a riddim, and once you hear Johnson's cadence over Dennis Bovell's dub arrangements you get why he basically invented dub poetry as a genre. The title track lays out the whole thesis — bass as culture, as history, as protest. Bovell's production is dense but never cluttered, giving Johnson's Jamaican patois room to breathe. Political, heavy, and still sounds urgent decades later.
