Donald Byrd's students turned in a tighter, funkier record than anyone expected on their debut. "Do It Fluid" is the reason DJs still pull this one out — that clavinet-and-drums pocket is undeniable. The ballads are fine but forgettable next to the funk cuts; this is a record you play for the grooves, not the slow numbers.
