Before the Neptunes became a genre unto themselves, this is where you hear them figuring it out. "Caught Out There" is the reason anyone remembers this record — that scream still sounds unhinged twenty-plus years later. But the deeper cuts, especially "Get Along With You," show Kelis could do vulnerable just as well as furious. Weird, sharp-edged R&B that the mainstream wasn't fully ready for yet.
